FAQs
How do I get to Edinburgh for the Fringe?
Edinburgh Waverley is the main station — direct trains from London Kings Cross (LNER, ~4.5 hrs), Birmingham, Manchester, and Glasgow. Flights into Edinburgh Airport with the tram straight to the city centre (about 30 mins). August is peak season so book travel early!
Where are the main Fringe venues?
The big venue hubs are The Pleasance Courtyard (Pleasance), Assembly Rooms & Assembly George Square, Gilded Balloon Teviot, and Underbelly Bristo Square. Smaller gems are scattered across the Old Town, New Town, and beyond. The Royal Mile is your starting point — just follow the flyers.
Is there parking near the venues?
Parking in central Edinburgh during August is a nightmare — the city is absolutely rammed. Use the Park & Ride at Ingliston (near the airport) or Straiton, then tram or bus in. Staying central or using Airbnb within walking distance is far less stressful.
What's the best pub for a pre-show drink?
The Pleasance Courtyard bar is legendary for people-watching and spotting performers. Greyfriars Bobby's on Candlemaker Row is classic Edinburgh. The Beehive Inn on Grassmarket is great for a pint before a show nearby. Brew Lab on South College Street does excellent coffee if you're doing back-to-back matinees.
Do I need to book shows in advance?
For big-name comedy acts, yes — absolutely book ahead, especially opening and closing weekends. Many smaller theatre and spoken word shows you can turn up on the day, but Fringe First winners sell out fast once reviews drop. The Fringe app is your best friend for last-minute availability.
What does 'Free Fringe' mean?
The PBH Free Fringe and Laughing Horse Free Festival run shows that are genuinely free to attend — performers ask for a voluntary donation at the end. These are separate from ticketed shows on the main Fringe programme and cannot be listed on Turnstile Exchange.
When do venues open and shows start?
Shows run from around 10am straight through to 3am depending on the venue. Most headline comedy shows are in the evening (7pm–10pm slots). Late-night cabaret and club nights kick off after 10:30pm. Check your specific show's listing on edfringe.com for exact times.
