How do I get to Summerhall?
Summerhall is right on the edge of The Meadows in Newington — really walkable from the city centre (about 15–20 mins from Waverley station). Lothian Buses 7, 8, 14, 29 and 31 stop nearby on Clerk Street. There's basically no parking on site so public transport or a walk across The Meadows is the way to go.
What's Summerhall actually like as a venue?
It's a former Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies — think labyrinthine Victorian buildings, courtyard bars, and rooms with incredible acoustics. Multiple stages spread across different rooms and the main courtyard. Part of the magic is wandering between them. Dress for a slightly chilly Scottish September evening — layers are your friend.
Is there a dress code?
Absolutely not — it's a psych festival. Flares, kaftans, vintage band tees, full Spacemen 3 cosplay — all welcome. Just be comfortable enough to stand for 3+ hours and maybe brave the courtyard at midnight.
What are the best pubs nearby?
Summerhall itself has a brilliant bar (the Royal Dick) with real ales and cider — it's on site so you won't need to leave. Nearby, the Meadow Bar on Buccleuch Street is a local favourite for a pre-show pint. The Pear Tree on West Nicolson Street has a great beer garden if you're heading over early.
What time do doors open?
Typically around 5–6pm on Friday and Saturday, with Sunday doors from 2pm for an afternoon/evening format. Always check the official schedule closer to the event as Summerhall sets times stage by stage.
