FAQs
How do I get to Goodwood Racecourse?
The easiest way from London is train to Chichester from Victoria (Southern Rail, about 1h 45m), then hop on one of the official shuttle buses up to the racecourse — they run right from the station forecourt. Driving: Goodwood is just off the A285 near Chichester, but parking sells out fast on Saturday so book in advance or use the train.
Is there a dress code?
Yes — and it's one of Goodwood's great traditions. Richmond Enclosure: smart dress required; jackets and ties for men, smart dresses or trouser suits for women. Gordon Enclosure: smart casual. Goodwood Enclosure: casual. No sportswear or ripped jeans anywhere on course. Goodwood loves style — treat it as an occasion!
Which enclosure should I go for?
Richmond Enclosure is the premium spot — closest to the parade ring and winning post, stunning views, and the best people-watching. Gordon Enclosure is brilliant value with a great atmosphere and still excellent sightlines. Goodwood Enclosure suits families and those wanting a relaxed, casual day out. For a special occasion, look at the hospitality suites.
What are the big races to watch?
Tuesday: Qatar Goodwood Cup (staying classic). Wednesday: Sussex Stakes (milers' championship). Thursday: King George Stakes (the sprinters). Friday: Glorious Stakes and Nassau Stakes. Saturday: the legendary Stewards' Cup handicap — one of the great spectacles of the flat season, with a field of 30 sprinting for the line. Each day has a Group 1 or feature race — you won't be bored!
What's the best pub near Goodwood?
The Anglesey Arms in Halnaker (10 mins from the course) is a local favourite and great for pre-race lunch. In Chichester, the Eastgate is popular on racedays for a post-race drink. The Bell Inn at Walderton is worth the short detour too. Many racegoers stay in Chichester itself — plenty of restaurants and bars around the city centre for the evening.
What time do gates open and when does racing start?
Gates generally open around 11:00am–11:30am. First race is typically at 1:50pm or 2:00pm each day, with seven races per afternoon. Last race is usually around 5:30pm–6:00pm. Arrive early to enjoy the paddock and pick your spot — especially on Friday and Saturday when the crowds are biggest.
