FAQs
How do I get to Royal Birkdale?
By train: Merseyrail Northern Line from Liverpool Central to Hillside station — the course is a short 10-minute walk away. Southport station is also on the same line and about a 10–15 minute walk or quick taxi. Trains run frequently and it's by far the easiest option. By car: Royal Birkdale is just off the A565 Coastal Road, but parking on site is very limited — the R&A runs official Park & Ride sites nearby. Book in advance via the official Open website.
What's the difference between Practice Days and Championship Rounds?
Practice Days (Sun 12 – Wed 15 July) are brilliant for getting close to the players on the range, watching pro-am action, and exploring the course at a relaxed pace. Crowds are smaller, you can follow your favourite player all day, and tickets are much cheaper. Championship Rounds (Thu–Sun) are the real deal — competitive golf, big leaderboard drama, and the famous Claret Jug ceremony on Sunday. Moving Day (Saturday) and Final Round (Sunday) are the hottest tickets.
What can I bring into the grounds?
The R&A has strict rules: no drones, no professional camera equipment with detachable lenses, and phones must be kept on silent during play. Small bags and rucksacks are allowed but subject to search. You can bring a reasonable amount of food and non-alcoholic drink in soft-sided bags. Folding chairs and periscopes are permitted. Full details are always published at theopen.com before the event.
Are there good grandstands, and where should I position myself?
The grandstands around the 18th green are iconic — that's where the Claret Jug moment happens and the crowds are electric. The 1st tee grandstand is brilliant for watching tee-off sequences all morning. Royal Birkdale's 17th hole (a par 3 over scrub and willow scrub dunes) is one of the great viewing holes in major championship golf — get there early for a good vantage point. Following a specific pairing on foot is a classic Open experience — just check the tee times on the app.
Where are the best pubs and places to eat near Royal Birkdale?
Southport town centre is about a 15-minute walk from the course — Lord Street is lined with bars and restaurants. The Bold Hotel on Lord Street is a popular base for Open week. The Fisherman's Rest in nearby Banks is worth the trip. For a proper pre-round breakfast, the cafes along Southport seafront open early during Open week. Inside the grounds, the food and drink village is well stocked but queues build quickly around peak tee times.
What's the dress code?
General grounds: smart casual is the norm — most people wear comfortable layers given the coastal weather. Trainers, shorts, and casual wear are all fine. Hospitality areas (1893 Club, Birkdale Suite etc.) require smart casual at minimum, and some premium areas request no denim or sportswear. Check your specific hospitality package terms. One golden rule: always bring waterproofs and a warm layer — it's a links course on the Lancashire coast and the weather is famously unpredictable.
Can I bring children?
Yes — under-16s go free when accompanied by a paying adult on all Championship days. It's a wonderful introduction to live golf. Practice days are particularly good for families as the atmosphere is more relaxed and you can get really close to the players.
