FAQs

How do I get to the National Theatre?

The easiest route is Waterloo station — it's about a 5-minute walk along the South Bank. Come out of the main exit, head towards the river and turn left. You can't miss it. Embankment is also walkable via Hungerford Bridge if you're on the District or Circle line.

Is there parking nearby?

Parking on the South Bank is limited and pricey. The National Car Park on Upper Ground (SE1) is the closest, but we'd genuinely recommend the train or tube — Waterloo is one of London's best-connected stations and the walk along the Thames is part of the evening.

When should I arrive?

The NT recommends arriving at least 30 minutes before curtain up. The building is worth exploring — there are free exhibitions, a great bookshop, and the riverside bar has a lovely terrace. The Olivier's foyer bars can get very busy at interval so order ahead if you can.

What are the best seats in the Olivier?

The Olivier is a fan-shaped thrust stage, so you're rarely far from the action. Rows D–L of the stalls are the sweet spot for most productions. The front circle gives a brilliant overview. Avoid extreme side seats in the upper circle if you can, as sightlines can be partial.

Are there any good pubs or restaurants nearby?

The NT's own Terrace Bar is lovely on a summer evening with views over the Thames. Nearby, try The Anchor on Bankside for a classic pub, Skylon in the Royal Festival Hall for a pre-show dinner, or grab something from one of the street food stalls along the South Bank.

Is there a dress code?

No dress code at the National Theatre — it's relaxed and welcoming. Smart casual is common for evening performances but you'll see everything from suits to jeans. Come as you are.
