FAQs
How do I get to the National Theatre?
The NT is right on the South Bank, a five-minute walk from Waterloo station (Bakerloo, Jubilee, Northern lines and National Rail). You can also walk across Hungerford Bridge from Embankment tube, which is a lovely approach with views of the Thames. Buses 1, 4, 26, 59, 68, 76, 139, 168, 171, 172, 176 all stop nearby.
Is there parking nearby?
Parking is limited and expensive in central London — public transport is strongly recommended. If you must drive, the nearest car parks are on Upper Ground and at the Southbank Centre. Better yet, hop on the Jubilee line to Waterloo and walk along the riverside.
Where should I go for a drink before the show?
The NT's own riverside bar and terraces are brilliant — grab a glass of wine and watch the Thames. The Understudy (beneath the NT) is a great pub with a wide beer selection. Nearby, the Anchor Bankside and Founders Arms are classic South Bank options. The Royal Festival Hall bars are a short stroll away too.
What time should I arrive?
The NT recommends arriving at least 30 minutes before curtain up. The Olivier bar opens about 90 minutes before performance. Late arrivals may not be admitted until a suitable break, so build in time, especially if coming from Waterloo at rush hour.
What is the Olivier Theatre like?
The Olivier is the NT's largest and most famous space — an open, fan-shaped auditorium inspired by the ancient Greek theatre at Epidaurus. Sightlines are excellent from almost every seat. The thrust stage puts the action close to the audience, which makes for an incredibly immersive experience.
Are there any access performances?
Yes — the NT programmes captioned, audio described, and relaxed performances throughout the run. Check the NT website for specific dates. Access tickets booked through the NT's access scheme are non-transferable and must not be listed for resale.
