FAQs
How do I get to York Racecourse from the city centre?
York Racecourse is about a mile from York city centre — a 20-minute walk across the Knavesmire, or a short taxi. Raceday shuttle buses run from the city centre too. York station is on the LNER main line, about 2 hours from London King's Cross. If you're coming by train, book early — Ebor Friday especially sells out fast.
Is there parking at the racecourse?
Yes — there's on-site parking at the racecourse, but spaces go quickly on Ebor Friday and Saturday. Book your parking in advance via York Racecourse's website. There's also park-and-ride from various points around York. If you're local, walking across the Knavesmire is a tradition in itself!
What's the dress code?
County Stand and Premier Enclosure: smart to formal — think suits, morning wear optional, dresses. Hats always welcome and very much encouraged. Grandstand & Paddock: smart casual is the standard. Knavesmire Lawn: casual and relaxed. Ripped jeans and sportswear are generally not welcome in the premium enclosures.
Which day is the most prestigious?
Friday — Ebor Day — is the headline act. The Ebor Handicap is Europe's richest flat handicap and draws enormous crowds. Wednesday's Juddmonte International is arguably the classier race in terms of Group 1 quality, and tends to have a more relaxed atmosphere. Both are brilliant in their own way.
What are the best pubs near the racecourse?
The Falcon (Micklegate) and The Golden Ball (Bishophill) are York locals' favourites for pre-race pints. Micklegate generally is the hub of raceday drinking — lively, welcoming, and full of people in their finery. There are also bars on course across all enclosures, with local Yorkshire ales always on tap.
Are children welcome?
Yes — under-18s go free when accompanied by a paying adult (check York Racecourse's website for exact age limits). Saturday's Showcase Day is particularly family-friendly. Children must be supervised at all times, and there are family areas on the Knavesmire Lawn.
